Detroit / Air Studies
January–March 2026

Seven distinct readings of one EPA AQS snapshot: daily PM2.5 24-hour block averages from seven Detroit stations. The selected file contains 548 observations across 90 calendar days, with 82 missing station-days. It was retrieved October 19, 2026. The latest Detroit observation in this file is March 31; these are archived observations, not a live feed or a claim that no newer data exist elsewhere.

The main series is station 26-163-0097, New Mt. Herman Church in 48217, which has all 90 days. Southwest (0015) has only 43 reported observations through March 17. It remains in network comparisons, with gaps and dashes rather than substituted values.

  1. Record. Monthly numerical register with seven station columns. Portrait shows fifteen neighboring dates. A binary availability strip shows all 630 possible station-days.
  2. Field. Seven fixed series share one 43.4 µg/m³ scale. The selected date steps through actual points. Missing dates break traces. Station offsets are categorical, not terrain. A pairwise Pearson correlation matrix uses only overlapping reported dates.
  3. Departure. Ninety primary readings displaced above or below the quarter median 6.45 µg/m³. A date cursor advances between samples; it does not alter stem heights. A companion trace shows the trailing seven-calendar-day mean (shorter windows at the beginning).
  4. Frequency. Ninety actual numbers occupy twelve equal concentration bins. Each observation keeps its position. Type-7 interpolated quartiles summarize the distribution; they are derived statistics, not additional measurements. Selection moves through records, not through invented particles.
  5. Comparison. Station bars and descending order update for each actual selected date. All bar lengths retain the same quarter-wide maximum scale of 43.4 µg/m³. Small traces preserve each station’s full recorded context. Row positions settle into descending order; the concentrations are never interpolated. Missing records remain dashes.
  6. Rank. Fixed connectors join each observation’s chronological position to its concentration rank. Selection emphasizes one record’s complete connection. A lower trace shows exact day-to-day changes.
  7. Cycle. One fixed circular spoke per day. Length is concentration, angle is chronological day across the quarter. The date cursor travels between dated spokes; no rotation, unfolding or breathing is added.

Recorded playback

Playback opens on March 31,2026, then steps through January–March, one source date every two seconds after a three-second opening hold. One shared playhead persists across all seven works. Hold and date scrubbing permit exact inspection. New Mt. Herman Church measured 10.9 µg/m³. This is the latest date in the selected Detroit archive, not the quarter’s peak. The complete quarter remains visible in context. The March 31 reference is the starting frame, not a fixed value throughout playback.

All seven renderers use p5.js. Numbers change only to actual source records; no concentration is interpolated. IBM Plex Mono regular and medium are bundled with their OFL license. This is an original numerical interface. The fixed-screen presentation supports swipes, arrows, light/dark mode and an in-frame guide. Only the visible work animates; opening the guide pauses playback. Portrait has a dedicated 1080×1440 composition; landscape uses 1920×1080. PNG export renders 2160×2880 or 3840×2160 respectively. Reduced-motion devices hold the artwork and use cuts.
