Six choreographed studies

p5.js compositions from one EPA AQS dataset: Detroit’s 2025 PM2.5 daily 24-hour block averages. Seven stations, 2448 reported observations, 107 missing station-days. The primary Southwest station has all 365 days. Concentration units are µg/m³. Full selection, units and source citations.

Each arrangement follows a 36-second sequence: hold for three seconds, move for twelve, hold for five, return for twelve, hold for four. Positions change smoothly; concentrations are never interpolated or invented. The selected date advances slowly except in study 16, which holds its date throughout each sequence. These are recorded measurements, not a live feed or a pollution transport model.

StudyData and operation
13All 365 primary-site values form a twelve-month numerical register. Columns are months; rows are day of month. Nonexistent dates remain blank. A slowly advancing selection changes the large readout and seven station readings. The register holds its position.
14Seven categorical station series share a 57.4 µg/m³ concentration scale. Calendar day increases horizontally; each station offsets the projection by 32 pixels horizontally and 58 vertically. A soft chronological reveal changes contrast without altering points. Missing observations break traces. Bottom numbers give selected concentration and station min / mean / max.
15The same 365 primary-site numerical glyphs move between a calendar and twelve equal-width concentration bins from 0 to 57.4 µg/m³. Each observation retains its identity and reported value. Three glyph columns per bin stack upward; height represents record count. The last bin includes the maximum.
16Seven station rows rearrange from station-code order to descending concentration order and return. Each sequence holds one date. Nulls appear as dashes and sort last. Bars use that date’s maximum as their local scale, printed on the left; their widths must not be compared across different dates as a fixed scale.
17All 365 primary-site observations migrate from chronological order to descending concentration rank, with earlier date breaking ties. Thin trajectories connect each observation’s two positions. Concentration determines vertical displacement in both arrangements. Selected readouts identify day index and rank.
18365 daily spokes unfold from a single circle into a linear calendar plot. Circular angle and linear x-position represent chronological day; spoke length represents concentration. Circular length is 145 pixels per 57.4 µg/m³; linear height expands that by 2.4. Month markers follow the transformation. This is an abstract calendar, not geography.

Playback

Each work plays for 60 seconds, with a gentle four-second crossfade. Arrows or swipes cycle works; Space holds playback, A toggles cycling, C changes palette, F requests fullscreen, S exports a 3840×2160 PNG, Escape returns to the grid. Reduced-motion devices start held and use cuts. Direct views without show=1 allow record scrubbing. All art fits centrally on mobile and desktop.
