Different layouts, the same Detroit PM2.5 source. The original six studies remain intact. These alternatives draw more directly on terminal logs, point-field graphics, fine connector diagrams and monitoring layouts. Dark is the default; C cycles to a light or cool-dark palette. These are p5.js artworks, not operating-system monitors.
The full dataset selection, units, missing-value policy and EPA citations apply unchanged: seven Detroit sites, 2025, parameter88101, daily24-hour block averages. No live-feed or pollution-source claim is made.
| Option | Mapping |
|---|---|
| 07 / Record feed | Three columns of actual site-day records, ordered by date then station. Columns show serial position in the full2555-slot calendar, station ID, month-day, daily concentration (µg/m³) and the EPA’s reported AQI for that record. Null AQI or concentration is an em dash, never zero. The displayed excerpt starts at the selected month’s first day and wraps within2025. Its highlighted seven-row block is the selected date. It is not a fabricated OS log or an executing command stream. |
| 08 / Point field | Seven series of exact observations projected into a layered field. X is calendar day; the categorical station axis offsets each trace by27 logical pixels horizontally and61 vertically. Y-height is concentration on a common310-pixel /57.4 µg/m³ scale. No values are interpolated between stations. Each point is one recorded sample. Every seventh date has a stem to its own zero baseline. Peak leaders connect each station’s highest reported day to its maximum readout. The selected-date spine connects only reported observations on that date. Bottom figures give selected value, recorded min/mean/max, and coverage. |
| 09 / Signal forest | Southwest Detroit’s complete365-day series. Horizontal position is date; signed vertical displacement from the central baseline is daily concentration minus the station’s2025 median (7.4 µg/m³). Above means higher than the median; below means lower. The fixed vertical scale is355 logical pixels per57.4 µg/m³ difference. Weekly dates are placed in four label lanes and joined to their actual samples. The large value is the selected concentration; the upper-right pair is deviation / median. This is a descriptive reference, not a health threshold. |
| 10 / Monitor wall | A primary-site yearly trace, seven segmented station bars, and an actual-record ledger. Bars quantize the selected concentration into40 segments against the snapshot maximum57.4 µg/m³. Adjacent numbers preserve the exact reported concentration. Coverage counts are valid observations /365. The right ledger begins at the selected date and wraps. No CPU, memory, network or invented status fields appear. |
| 11 / Reordered ribbon | Each connector is the same Southwest Detroit observation in two arrangements: chronological day position above and concentration rank below. The lower ordering is descending concentration with earlier date breaking ties. All365 identities are retained; the selected one is emphasized. Upper stem length represents concentration; lower stem depth represents rank, so they are different scales. This is not a network-flow or transport diagram. Small strips list the135 highest actual concentrations. |
| 12 / Circular character map | All365 primary-site values appear as numerical glyphs. The twelve concentric rows are months, with January inside; angle is day of month on31 equal positions. Shorter-month positions do not exist and stay blank. No ring outlines, textures, or random numbers are drawn. The selected month has higher ink contrast. The center gives selected date/value/day index; side ledgers show neighboring days and selected station observations. Glyph density follows the calendar arrangement, not particle locations. |
The same slow four-second crossfade and60-second cycling apply. Arrows or swipes navigate; Space holds, A toggles auto-cycling, F requests fullscreen, S saves a3840×2160 PNG, and Escape returns to the options grid. Reduced-motion devices start held and use cuts. Open an option without show=1 to scrub records directly.
